HOW TO IDENTIFY A BAD TUBE

If you are experiencing odd sounds such as static, pops, or any other unusual audio anomalies, it's essential to perform a systematic evaluation of your equipment, especially if you have already checked the tube socket pins. This guide will help you identify a potentially faulty tube.

STEPS TO IDENTIFY A BAD TUBE

For reference if you are looking at the amp, draw a line in your mind down the center. Tubes on the left side are the left channel, tunes on the right side are the right channel.

Visually Inspect all the tubes:

  • If there is signs of damage internally, broken glass, or any other obvious sign of damage then replace the tube before moving further.

SIGNAL TUBE TROUBLESHOOTING:

  1. Swap Both Tubes:

    • Switch the small signal tubes left for right and check if the problem moves to the other channel.

    • If the issue moves, one of these tubes is faulty.

    • If the issue stays, the problem is elsewhere.

  2. Isolate the Faulty Tube:

    • Swap one tube from left to right.

    • If the problem moves, that specific tube is bad.

    • If the problem stays in the same channel, then the tube that was not moved is the bad one.

POWER TUBE TROUBLESHOOTING

  1. Swap Both Power Tubes:

    • Move the two left-side power tubes to the right side.

    • If the problem moves to the opposite channel, one of these tubes is faulty.

  2. Identify the Bad Tube:

    • Swap one tube from left to right.

    • If the problem moves, that specific tube is bad.

    • If the problem stays, the tube that was not moved is bad.

  3. Check for Multiple Failures:

    • If both channels now have the issue, both the tube just moved and the tube that was not moved must be replaced.

NEXT STEPS:

  • Once you've identified the faulty tube(s), replace them accordingly.

INSTRUCTIONS for the FX10H

  • With the amp powered off, remove 3 of the EL84 power tubes from the amp. Just leave one in the first socket. (Leave both of the 12AX7 signal tube installed)

  • Turn the amp on with just the one power tube inserted. If the amp turns itself off, that is the bad tube. If the amp stays on, the tube is good.

  • To continue, turn the amp off and let it cool for about 5 -10 min and remove the tube you tested and set it aside.

  • Repeat this process for all of the power tubes; there may be one or multiple bad tubes. Order exact replacements for the bad tube(s).
